Just when we thought we were getting a grip on winter, the lights went out — literally. For the past few days, residents in Sky City, Palmridge, Namhlanje and surrounding areas have been without power, and the cause? A major fire at the Palm Ridge Substation on 3 July 2025. Here’s everything you need to know, unpacked and simplified 👇
🚨 What Caused the Outage?
The blaze reportedly started in the 11kV control room of the Palm Ridge substation and rapidly spread through critical infrastructure. Two of the three transformers were spared, while the third is currently undergoing repairs. The actual cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated by Ekurhuleni’s fire and electrical teams.
Image suggestion: Charred control panels, burned wires, or damaged transformers after a substation fire.
🛠️ Restoration Timeline – What’s Being Done?
City engineers jumped into action fast. By 8 July, pressure testing and cable inspections began on site. A workaround called a “contingency bypass” is now underway to restore electricity while avoiding the damaged building.
Here’s the projected timeline:
- July 3: Fire erupts, causing complete outage.
- July 4–7: Site inspections and safety clearances.
- July 8: Testing and debris removal kicks off.
- July 11: Temporary switching prioritized to re-route supply.
- July 15: Target date for full restoration.
🤷🏾♂️ So Who’s to Blame?
This is where things get complicated. Residents are furious, pointing to illegal connections and poor planning in informal settlements. Some say this fire was a disaster waiting to happen. But the City of Ekurhuleni isn’t pointing fingers — not at Cosmopolitan (the developer) or anyone else — just yet.
The MMC for Energy, Mzayifani Ngwenya, explained that electricity rollouts are delayed in areas like Sky City due to incomplete housing infrastructure. Basically, the city says “electricity is the last step” — but for those of us living in the dark, it doesn’t feel like much of a step forward.
📢 What Are Officials Saying?
- Fire Spokesperson: “The actual cause is undetermined and under investigation.”
- Energy Department: “We are looking at alternative power sources and will give regular updates.”
- MMC Ngwenya: “Delays are due to human settlement development and not energy capacity.”
